Skinomi TechSkin - Skin Protector Shield Full Body for Apple iPhone 4 Review by Cameron Switzer "Cam Switzer" (Tokyo, Japan)

One of my associates recently purchased an i-Phone 4 and he wanted a cover that wasn't an ugly plastic or silicon thing that would reduce the natural beauty of his phone. We found this product online and he decided to try it. I purchased it for him, but he could not get it on straight. He spent hours trying to do so, and in the end tore it all off and gave up.

I can only report what I have been told, but for some, this product may not be as simple as one might suspect.

I believe that if you are a stickler for perfection, then it may work fine for you; however if you are not, you may end up wasting your money.

The other reviews are relatively good so we were confidence he would be able to do this well. Unfortunately, we were wrong.

Skinomi TechSkin - Skin Protector Shield Full Body for Apple iPhone 4 Review by Robert Vachalek (Cupertino, CA, USA)

I had an original iPhone and 3GS before I got the 4. The original never scratched but the 3GS seemed more sensitive and I ended up with a number of fine scratches on the screen despite the same care in handling. Therefore I don't want to take chances with my 4.

I've installed similar but cheaper skins on other devices such as old Palms and the Nintendo DS. The Skinomi application process was a little different in that you put it on wet. I think it's an improvement but it's still fiddly and hard to notice minor imperfections until it's too dry to really fix. It still came out OK if I don't want to be a perfectionist, but part of the iPhone 4's appeal is its beauty and so this is annoying. It's also annoying that their stated "lifetime replacement" policy doesn't apply to installation problems so take care.

The surface of the skin is a little rubbery to the touch. I have an internal debate over whether I like it or not but I think "like" is winning. I'd recommend the full body cover for more than just scratch resistance: (1) it makes the whole thing easier to grip and (2) for me at least, it eliminates the famous signal attenuation problem. It seems slightly less likely to get oily smudges from fingerprints but given how bad any iDevice looks when it's turned off, this isn't saying much. On the downside it seems to grab dust slightly more easily than the bare glass, but once again it's not a big deal.

But to get down to the real purpose here, it does seem to be very tough. I can't imagine anything really that could accidentally scratch the screen through this. It's fairly easy to make minor marks however; I can draw lines all over it with my fingernail quite easily. Then again they do seem to "self heal" over time as advertised. It will take more time to determine just how complete that healing can be but my impression is that it will take a considerable amount of time if it ever happens. Unfortunately I think anything that comes between you and the 4's screen will reduce some of that beautiful clarity, but the marks are not immediately obvious when the device is turned on.

All in all, I think this provides great protection that preserves much of the iPhone 4's natural good looks, but still intrudes enough on the experience to feel like a worthwhile but unfortunate "cost" of protecting the device.

Skinomi TechSkin - Skin Protector Shield Full Body for Apple iPhone 4 Review by JC Karlo

After reading positive reviews, I decided to give this protector a shot. I managed to install it with no dust or lint, but there's no satisfaction to be had afterwards. I have uploaded pictures to show what I'm talking about below.

First of all the cutout size is smaller than the glass, which could be understandable to avoid dust collecting on the edges. But the main problem is that the cutouts for the home button and speaker do not center on them. Right now the cutout for the speaker/front camera sits lower than it should be, while the cutout for the home button sits higher than it should...a necessary compromise since aligning one of them would misalign the other.

Secondly, the "orange peel" effect is VERY apparent, regardless if I'm looking straight down on it at arms length, or if I'm looking at it at an angle. The surface also has that sort of "sticky" feeling, which doesn't allow my thumb to easily glide over the screen unlike the phone's glass surface itself. Even more, it's more prone to fingerprints than the glass. It also makes your iPhone tend to stick to flat surfaces, especially glass. I could actually place the phone against the screen of my iMac, and after about 5 seconds without force, the phone would be stuck on the iMac's screen...the bond is so strong that I can press the volume and sleep button while it's stuck on there.

The worst part is what Skinomi claims is not a problem with their product and that is the rainbow effect. There are fine vertical lines going across the length of the screen protector that is too obvious and distracting. Having no rainbow effect is probably the most important thing to look for in screen protectors, especially for a display like the iPhone 4's Retina.

The good thing is that it doesn't scratch, and any scratch marks it picks up would disappear in a minute or so. But there are way to many drawbacks that outweigh it...sure it protects the screen, but it also takes the quality away from it.

I would highly recommend Power Support's screen protectors.

Altec Lansing UHP606 Consumer Report

Altec Lansing UHP606 Review by J. Long (Boston, MA, USA)

Current home headphones: Sennheiser HD 560II

Previous portable headphones: Sennheiser CX300, Sony MDR-EX51, before that dozens and dozens of Sony "vertical in-the-ear" types, and: JVC "Marshmallow" (because I accidentally severed my Sennheiser cable and needed a pair of headphones cheap and quick; they're not horrible for $15),

Playback: iPod Classic, library mostly ripped from CD using Apple Lossless

Content: rock, pop, dance, classical, etc.

These headphones aren't for everyone. If you want something that you can plug in and stop thinking about, look elsewhere. What these appear to strive for is more along the lines of true studio monitors that do not color the output of your device. Compared to my home Sennheisers, I see where they're going with that concept, but being tiny little relatively-inexpensive portables they miss the mark a bit.

That said, they are very good headphones. As another reviewer commented there is an articulation to the sound that was missing with every previous pair of portables I have owned. There is not the hair-trigger overloading that plagued the CX300s. Highs are nicely defined without being screechy. They have a very well-formed low-end, and no, they don't have SupaBaBoomyBass - if that's what you're after, there are plenty of other options. Yes, the midrange is pronounced. But thus far I haven't seen that as being a bad thing. For tracks that do warrant a pronounced low end, these actually do quite well - songs with busy bass lines sound clear and don't get lost in a quagmire of rumbles.

As an iPod-EQ fusser I will note that all my setting have had to change. Yes, I will agree with the displeased reviewer that these sounded awkward right out of the box with EQ that had been set up for headphones with a dramatically different purpose. But I do not agree that there is nothing that can be done to fit your preferences to what these headphones have to offer.

With all my old headphones tracks primarily sounded good with the Classical or R&B EQ, though other tracks were spread over Electronic or, in the case of a few dreadfully loud and compressed mastering jobs - no EQ at all. With these headphones I have taken the Loudness EQ setting as my starting point, which works for a lot of what I'm listening to (these tracks sounded great on my way to work this morning: Hüsker Dü, "Games"'; Fleetwood Mac, "Love In Store"; Front 242, "Masterhit"; Rod Stewart, "Every Picture Tells A Story"; Tears For Fears, "Sowing the Seeds of Love"; Shudder To Think, "Love Catastrophe"). Other bits - notably classical - will require different settings. More experimentation necessary, which is fine by me: any excuse to listen to more music is a bonus in my book.

The highlight is clearly the comfort. They feel very good in my ears, come with 4 different types (not just sizes) of tips to match your preferences, and the cord is not as prone to transmitting vibration as others (the severe drawback of the otherwise-OK "Marsmallows"). The default tips feel great to me and are much more effective as outside-sound-blocking than any of my previous purchases.

A good choice for me.

Altec Lansing UHP606 Review by Jim

My first impression was, "Where's the bass?" In an effort to find out, not only did I give the BackBeat Pro in-ear-monitors (IEM) a breaking in, I tried them with 3 of the 4 pairs of tips they come with (I didn't try them with the child-sized tips). I also tried them with different kinds of music (bass-heavy dance, rock, and instrumental classical as well as opera), from different sources (two different classical stations available via the web, music played via Windows Media Player, and music played on my Sony MP3 player). After a breaking in period of less than 8 hours I thought I detected a slight improvement, but so slight that I found myself on the verge of returning them.

It then occurred to me to try, as a last resort, the tips from IEM I own that fit me perfectly, those being the largest size tips that come with the JVC HAFX66 and the Sony MDR-EX082. I changed the tips, put on a bass-heavy song on my MP3 player from a live album by the German group Seabound, and finally BASS. I'd tested the IEM with the same song just a few minutes before changing the tips, and the difference was night and day. Having the just-right-for-me seal in my ears made all the difference between virtually no bass and the bass I would expect from IEM with a list price of a hundred bucks that are not marketed as being bass-heavy IEM. And I could not get that seal with any of the tips included with the BackBeat Pros. (Obviously this is subjective and has to do with my ears. Someone else might find one or more pairs of tips that come with the BBP's perfect for their ears, bass-wise and otherwise. I noticed that the tips that come with the BBPs lack the rubbery, "sticky" quality that the JVC tips as well as the tips on the Sony buds that I mention below have. That rubbery, "sticky" quality makes for a better, tighter, more lasting in-the-ear seal, in my experience. And I did try wetting the JVC tips before insertion after getting unsatisfactory results without wetting them, and it made no difference. Also, I've found that I get the absolute best sound when I use Comply T400 Foam Tips - size large for me - with the BackBeat Pros. Using the Comply tips brings both the listening experience and the noise isolation to a whole new level.)

I find the BackBeat Pros to be excellent with mids and highs and good enough with bass. They may not have bona fide "reference" quality sound, but they do have exceptionally clear sound and presence. I have also found that I can listen to them at much lower volume levels than required for the other IEM I own (the aforementioned JVCs and Sonys, and Sennheiser MX51 earbuds). Roughly, volume level 9 on my MP3 player with the Altec Lansings is as loud as volume 15 with the other buds (the maximum volume level that the MP3 player can go to is 30).

These IEM have balanced armature speakers or a balanced armature transducer design. Balanced armature transducers are typically found in better-than-entry-level to audiophile quality IEM. (One can read more about balanced armatures at the Wikipedia entry for headphones.) In Altec Lansing's BackBeat line, which consists of 4 models (Classic, Plus, Titanium, and Pro, in order of least to most expensive), only the BackBeat Pro model uses the balanced armature transducer type. The others use dynamic transducers, typical of entry level IEM. The balanced armature transducers in the BackBeat Pros deliver sound that, with a proper seal in the ear canal, I find remarkably clear and present. Altec Lansing suggests that the BackBeat Pros produce "reference" and "studio" quality sound, and while that is an exaggeration, I find their fidelity impressive, and exceptional for the price I paid [...].

Amazon is offering the BackBeat Pros for [...] until 2/22/10 as part of their "Our 10 Best Headphones Deals Right Now" offer. I may order another pair or maybe 2 at [...], to have handy for gifts (they come in a nice box and with the included soft, padded and zippered carrying case make an impressive presentation). At this price they are a steal (at a list price of [...] they are the most expensive earphones in Altec Lansing's current catalog, and while that may be an inflated list price, it's not ridiculously inflated in the way that JLabs list price of [...] is for two of their IEM). I would, however, tell gift recipients that in my experience, they sound radically better to me with different tips, and that if they find that they are getting virtually no bass, they should try them with tips other than those supplied with them (alternative tips can be purchased at Amazon, Radio Shack, etc., such as Comply T400 Foam Tips, which fit the BackBeat Pros perfectly).

Altec Lansing UHP606:: Description

Music professionals know well designed earphones shouldn’t compete with outside noises. High listening volumes not only distort sound, they’re not healthy. A superior seal to block out ambient sound is critical. Once that’s achieved, only the highest definition micro-speakers will do. BackBeat Pro earphones deliver both. Super flexible SnugFit™ neoprene ear tips, plus dual flange technology, conform to your ear for superior noise isolation. The balanced armature speakers – essentially full-range miniaturized speakers with built-in amplifiers – are professionally tuned for musician-grade sound. The result is true high-definition, ultra-low distortion audio that rivals recording studio reference speakers. Carry case and eight-piece fit kit included.

INSTEN Super High Resolution GOLD 50 ft High Speed HDMI Cable Male 1080p 1.3b Black for HDTV / Plasma / LCD / PS3 Review by bb999

Cable works perfectly. I use this to hook my computer up to my TV when I want to watch a movie or show. Nothing to complain about. The cable plugs are made of metal (or something that feels like metal) and feel solid. The cable itself is wrapped in a nice braided plastic/nylon material, feels very nice and is durable. The cable itself is fairly flexible for its girth and stays where you lay it (doesn't want to coil back into a coil). Overall a great cable for the price.

I got this baby running inside and out to the porch to get my Sat recvr to play out there. Quality is excellent. No complaints. Sturdy cable at great price.

INSTEN Super High Resolution GOLD 50 ft High Speed HDMI Cable Male 1080p 1.3b Black for HDTV / Plasma / LCD / PS3 Review by Joe Huber (San Jose California)

Great price on a well made cable. Worked perfectly from my DirecTV HR21 to my Samsung 40C6500 LED TV. The 50 ft length didn't seem to cause any problems at all.

Bower VFK58C Reviews

Bower VFK58C Review by R. Bierig "forestman" (forestman)

I ordered this filter set because I wanted a good and inexpensive CPL; I have not yet used the other two filters in the set (UV and ND). I am fairly inexperienced when it comes to filters in general and this was my first reach into the shelf. I thought it was a good deal given that it had good reviews. It turns out (at least for the single filter I am using) that more people on this site have been inexperienced as well and perhaps don't even know that yet.

The filter has some positive effect on the picture quality at bight days as expected, however, when using it with my CANON 55-250 glass, I am getting heavily distorted pictures when zooming closer than 135mm. The otherwise perfectly sharp picture of that glass crumbles and turns practically unusable when going beyond 130mm and reaching terrible quality at 250mm. This means, I cannot use the CPL from this packages for that glass. I assume it would perform similar with any other telezoom in that range. Because of this shortcoming, I only give it 3 stars and I ended up operating it on the kit lens (Canon 18-55). I did not pay much, that is true, and now I know why people spend up to 100$ on a good filter. Think about it before you buy yours. Read professional reviews about the subject matter before ordering. Lession learnt!

Bower VFK58C Review by Andra L. Marquardt (Mandan, ND USA)

These filters are well-made with a brushed-metal frame and glass filter. All three work beautifully. As one other reviewer said, the rotating ability of the polarizer is a handy feature.

The lens cap stays on well, as long as it's attached properly. It's popped off a few times as I put my camera back in its case, but that's user-error, not a problem with the cap. I mention it only because others might have the same experience.

Bower VFK58C Review by Adrian M - Costa Rica

I bought this pack of lenses a few weeks ago. Let me just explain that I am not even close to a professional photographer. I like to take pictures enough that I took a class and learned about filters there. I am using a Canon Powershot SX20 IS, which is a neat camera, but nothing compared to a SRL.

In any case, I just wanted these filters to improve the quality of my pictures. I have to be honest, I was looking for something cheap that would serve basic functions.

Well, this product does what it says and gives you what you asked for. The 3 filters it provides are basic stuff every photographer in the making needs, and each of them delivers. UV filter does a good job, I havent seen any color change due to its use. ND is good as well, giving you a good filter for light, specially in ultra bright settings. And the polarizer is good as well, it filters what needs to be filtered.

Since I am not a professional, I cant give you exact numbers or specifications. I just can say they are good enough for a beginner, they offer what a basic user needs.

They come in a small pack where you can store them. Each one in a small plastic bag.

The reason for the 4 stars is that it also provides a lens cap. The cord attaches to the cap with an adhesive, which tends to loose adhesiveness over time, which makes losing your cap real common.

Overall: Good for basic use, as a photography student, found to be good tools.

OK. Let's get started!

Jabra Classic EarSet for Samsung Phones with a 2.5mm Jack Review by Chris in St. Pete (St. Petersburg, FL United States)

I had seen several people using this and thought it was a great design. They gave it excellent reviews so I took the plunge.

I was under the impression that the ear piece picked up your voice from your ear canal so that your speeach would be crystal clear to the person on the other end. However, this isnt the case. The mic is in the piece that sticks out of your ear. This is only a problem in loud environments where the mic tends to pick up a lot of background noise. I drive a sports car that has a relativly loud cockpit and tend to get complaints from the people I speak to. When I drive the wife's sedan its no problem at all.

As for quality, it is very well put together and I haven't had any issues. The brightly colored silicone ear pieces let you select from small, medium and large for both right and left ears. I leave mine in the car a lot and the blue colors started to fade and popped off of the earphone more easily. The rubber ear piece can be easy to loose.

Sound quality is very good as long as the rubber piece is correctly seated on the earphone. It also has to be placed in your ear correctly or the sound is a bit muffled.

I had tried other over the ear boom mics and those "bug on a wire" style. They all present compromises on quality and clarity. This has been the best trade off I have tried.

Overall a high quality hands-free that looks cool too.

Jabra Classic EarSet for Samsung Phones with a 2.5mm Jack Review by Mark Kosobiecki (Connecticut)

I bought this earset and, used it for about a year before finally giving up on it and trying something else. First, the positives: it is light weight, the users sound quality is good to excellent and, I loved the fact that it had an inline switch that could answer my phone. That aside, here are some of the things I didn't particularly like: the ear gels; while they are comfortable, I always felt like my ear was between sizes and, the earset was either going to fall out or, it was too tight. Another thing with the ear gels is that they sit pretty far into the ear canal and, no matter how clean I kept my ears, the gels always had that, eww, gross look and appeal to them. The sound quality to the caller wasn't the best, I found myself doing a lot of yelling so people could understand what I was saying.
Just let me say that these head/earsets are very subjective and, my best advice to you would be to try one until you find you're comfortable with especially if you're going to be using it a lot. What's one persons preference in this case may not be right for another user.

Xcite 35-0120-05 Review by Tommy C

i think they should stop selling this product here. i recevied this item and plugged it in to my 12v car charger. and nothing happened. it doesnt work. poor quality. i didnt even returned it b/c its waste of my time going to post office. i just trashed in garbage.. Dont buy it!!!

Xcite 35-0120-05 Review by BMOR99 "enV Vixen" (San Francisco, CA USA)

Simply put, what a piece of...crap. The instructions are vague, setup is difficult to impossible, and the quality of the item is poor. I would definitely NOT recommend purchasing this item.

Xcite 35-0120-05 Review by Oganigwe (Baltimore, MD USA)

The unit paired with my Samsung Memoir SGH-T929 automatically with no need to enter a code.
Loud volume in the car & clear sound with built-in mic.
Easy to use. Was shipped fast.
Make sure the volume on bluetooth earpiece unit is turned up before pushing it into the car adapter unit.
Failure to do this may result in no sound or low sound in the car!
I have ordered 3 so far. One would not charge but was replaced with a new one.

Empire WI-2303 Review by M. Robinson "Nite" (Rockford, IL)

I purchased two pairs of these, one for myself and one for my wife. My wifes had the issue of the first reviewer. After 3 months of use one side stopped working. The pair I have work, but I rarely use mine. They are very comfortable and come with different size ear pieces so you can find the perfect fit. I'm just not sold on the quality, or the sound. My wife doesnt mind, but I'm a music enthusiast and do not like the sound these buds produce. I probably wont turn in the warranty either, but thats probably what they expect. I paid only four bucks a pair though through a different site so its not a complete loss. So if you find these cheap (like we did) its worth it for a few months worth of use. Anything over twenty bucks though I would pass.

Empire WI-2303 Review by S. Billups (TEXAS, US)

This little earbuds just BLEW ME AWAY! The sound quality is the best I've heard, even as good as Skull Candy and those $200 earbuds. Ignore that first review! There are some online ones you can find if you just google "Wicked Little Buds Review" that completely agree with me. The bass isn't the very very best but it is still quite good. It comes with three sizes which all come in handy, big ones for noisy places, small ones for lengthy listening, and medium ones for the in between.
All in all, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Empire WI-2303 Review by Anurag

This pair of earbuds are really bad at Bass sound reproduction, I like wicked headphones and have used jaw-breaker wicked earbuds(Wicked Jaw Breaker WI-2100 (Black)) which produce awesome bass sound, but due to heavy wear and tear and cord wire becoming hard after a year usage, I had to look for a different earbuds with nylon cords, This little buds wicked earbuds does have nylon cord and they just seem to fit the bill too. But Bass sound reproduction is just not acceptable. Please don't consider this as an option in your list.

Update: So within 45 days this earphone has gone kaput, there is no sound in on 1 earphone until cord is twisted or bent near the connector. The nylon sheet covered wire which i thought will give this long life is of no use. somebody else also mentioned the same happening with them, but i thought it could be due to high usage. I am out of free return dates also. so guess nothing can be done. :| Wouldn't recommend this product to anybody. Taking 1 more star off this product.

BOB WS1001 Review by tnt texas

Took a few tries (even with directions) to get this on right. But now I don't miss a run due to low temps. Yay!!!

BOB WS1001 Review by lindsey

My husband and I both run marathons, and have been training for fall marathons with our baby girl. When weather turned chilly and started to rain, we purchased this to keep her warm and dry. Prior to this we had just used the sun/insect shield, but got caught in a few unexpected rainstorms and ended up with a drenched baby. We have used this a couple of times, including through a good storm and she has remained dry. An added bonus is that the shield keeps toys and blankets inside the stroller, no more stopping to pick up objects pitched off the side! I hope to be able to continue running with her through the fall, even on chilly or wet days. It is difficult to put on the first couple of times, but gets easier with practice.

BOB WS1001 Review by Joseph Valentine Dworak (Minneapolis, MN)

We bought and have been using the weather shield on our Ironman Bob stroller for the past few months. This works as advertised. Our 1 year old enjoys being out and not having to deal with cold wind chills that Minneapolis has from November - March.

It is really easy to use and performs really well, with one exception. We went out during a light snowstorm and it tends to fog up as the snow melts on and around the shield. Not a big deal, but just something to note.

We really do not need to use this unless it is below 30 degrees, but once we get there, it is great to use.

The Bachman Books : Four Early Novels by Richard Bachman (Rage / The Long Walk / Roadwork / The Running Man) Product reviews

The Bachman Books : Four Early Novels by Richard Bachman (Rage / The Long Walk / Roadwork / The Running Man) Review by

Once again, this brilliant author has brought forth a collection of stories which prove that he does not simply write horror, and that his boundaries go far and wide. Unfortunately, it's hard to find all four of these novellas in a complete collection, due to censorship reasons, but if you can get your hands on all of them in this single volume, I would advise you not to hesitate. Built up from four different stories; "Rage", "The Long Walk", "Roadwork", and "The Running Man", King has expanded on his ability to examine the human mind and the very essence of sanity in "Rage" and "Roadwork", while looking at the future in a new light that seems too possible, almost to the point of terrifying in "The Long Walk" and "The Running Man".

The first novella, "Rage", is the one and only reason that it is so difficult to find all four of these stories in a single volume, being the only one that wasn't re-printed and individually published. Banned from bookshelves due to censorship, this story seems to prophesize down to the finest points all the tragic school shootings which have taken place, even though it was written in the 1970's, far before such a thing was hyped up. Based around the main character Charlie Decker, the reader watches as his sanity slowly slips away and drives him to execute teachers at his high school, resulting in taking his math class hostage in a vicious standoff with the police force. Although the story may sound violent, predictable, and inappropriate depending on your opinion, it proves to be more than just violence and mindless bloodshed. As the class is held hostage, both Charlie and his classmates engage in a series of flashbacks and events looking back on life, each learning something about themselves. A very good read, by far, which should be re-printed. If censorship starts here, where does it end?

"The Long Walk", which follows "Rage", is definitely the best of these four stories, and one of the two based around futuristic game shows played on violence, simply to entertain the brainwashed masses of America (along with "The Running Man"). The rules of the game shown in the story are simple. One hundred boys from the ages of 14-18 are to begin walking at the U.S/Canada border. With chronometers attached to them, they are to keep their pace above 4 miles an hour at all times. Every time one of them drops under this pace, they are issued a warning. If, after three warnings, the pace drops again, the boy is executed by soldiers armed with high-powered carbine rifles. The suspense and constant wondering of who is going to die next haunts this tale. As the plot thickens and the game starts to enter it's second and third day of straight walking, empathy sets in and the reader feels like they are among the characters, back and feet in pain from the constant work. One thing which is not mentioned about this story much is the Vietnam metaphor, reflecting how the country sends their best young men off to die, only a small number ever to return, and then pushed beyond their sanity if they survive long enough. Various other metaphors exist, but are purely speculative.

The third novella, "Roadwork", was excellent, but my least favorite of all. All of the plot revolves around the main characters fall from sanity, just as in "Rage". Barton Dawes, the main character, watches as the government tries to tear his house down to build a freeway extension, his only child dies from a brain tumor, he loses his job, his wife leaves him, and he is left with no options. The story moves too slowly at first, and their isn't much action until the final pages of climax, but the characters are believable and the plot is original, similar to the film "Falling Down". The only real complaint is the fact that the story is extremely long, but only about the last 10 pages, give or take, are used to show the final steps of Barton's sanity disappearing. However, don't let that stop you. After getting into it, the story really grabs you, whether it's loaded with action or not.

"The Running Man" finishes off this volume, telling the tale of Ben Richards, a poor man whose little girl is dying of pneumonia, as he enters a game show where he has 30 days to flee bounty hunters across the world, with all of society able to turn him in for money. If he is caught, he is brutally executed to entertain middle class America on television. If he escapes the whole 30 days, there is a billion dollar jackpot waiting for him. The end is completely unpredictable and keeps you in constant suspense. If you're going to compare it to the film, don't bother. The film is good action, but weak compared to this. The story simply grabs you in the first paragraph and doesn't let go, even after the ending.

All four stories are excellent, even though the endings of "Rage" and "Roadwork" are a bit predictable. As far as "The Long Walk" and "The Running Man" go, they are some of the best suspense you'll ever read. Looking at modern television, with "survival" game-shows such as "Survivor", "The Mole", and "Bootcamp", along with a million other clones, the reality of game shows based around death seems all too near. Frightening and exhilarating to think about. A must-have for any King fan.

The Bachman Books : Four Early Novels by Richard Bachman (Rage / The Long Walk / Roadwork / The Running Man) Review by

It's been a while since I read this, but I remember all of the stories being pretty good. I'm only weighing in here to point out that it was Stephen King himself who censored this book. In a speech to a library association, which you can read at , King states that after his book (specifically the story called "The Rage") had been mentioned in connection with 2 school shootings, and the FBI requested an interview with King, he called his publisher and asked them to take it out of print. While this is unfortunate censorship that King may have been driven to, he ultimately censored himself.

The Bachman Books : Four Early Novels by Richard Bachman (Rage / The Long Walk / Roadwork / The Running Man) Review by Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA)

The true identify of Richard Bachman did not get out until the publication of Thinner, Bachman's fifth book. These first four Bachman novels were the sorts of books you might find in a grocery store or - more likely - never have come across at all because they weren't really marketed at all - at Stephen King's request. Naturally, they didn't sell all that well - not until the true author was revealed, of course. These represent an interesting cross-section of King's writing life. Rage and The Long Walk are truly early King novels, Roadwork emerged in between the novels 'Salem's Lot and The Shining, and The Running Man was published in 1982, the product of a mere seventy-two hours of writing. They are quite different novels, yet they all share a common theme - a man displaced by society and doing what he can to combat the forces closing in around him.

This collection is about the only place you can find the novel Rage these days. After the Columbine tragedy, Stephen King basically had all copies of Rage pulled from the shelves. The novel features a high school student who wigs out, shoots two teachers, and holds his class hostage for several hours. The real heart of the story is the way the students react to their captor during their ordeal; they go way beyond merely sympathizing with him. King really breaks down the emotional walls of these characters, mining some of the real issues that teenagers have to deal with in their lives. To me, this novel is raw but instructive, surreal yet amazingly open and honest, and well worth reading.

If you ask me, The Long Walk (written while King was a college freshman) may well be the most fascinating novel King has ever written. It's a disarmingly simple tale centered on a seemingly mundane activity, yet in King's masterful hands The Long Walk burrows into the core of a number of characters, lays down miles of metaphors about the human condition, and absolutely mesmerizes you with its emotional force and power. The contestants (all but one of whom will die - and they know it) do a lot of talking while they're walking; most of them dance around the "why" issue, but we see clues to some of the reasons as each lad draws closer and closer to death. Cockiness turns to anger, fear, shock, and just about every other kind of dark emotion you can imagine. The boys are stripped bare in both body and mind as the Walk goes on and on. Through his characters, King is basically asking the reader how he/she will face death when it comes. Will you freeze up early on? How long will you fight to stay alive after you've pushed your body far beyond the breaking point? Will you lie down and accept your fate, or will you lose control and lash out at your perceived enemies? I could read this novel over and over again without ever growing tired of it. It's just endlessly fascinating and illuminating.

Roadwork represented an attempt on King's part to go straight, to prove he could write a mainstream novel. In its essence, Roadwork is the story of a man pushed beyond his means of coping with change. We the readers basically watch Bart Dawes go insane as the days pass. We watch him lie to his wife and to himself, drink himself into nightly stupors, procure destructive objects from dangerous men, and plot revenge on those who have taken away the few things in life he could cling to. At the center of his problem is his son Charlie, who died of a brain tumor three years earlier; George can't understand why his son had to die, and he can't bear the thought of his home, Charlie's home, being destroyed. Even as we watch Dawes do some terrible things, we can't help but sympathize with a man so beaten down by the cruel vagaries of life. King has said that Roadwork was in some ways a product of the death of his mother. The book served as a vehicle to let him work through his own emotional issues over his loss. Why does a loved one have to die? That question permeates this novel. It's a very personal story, but it is one almost any adult reader can relate to very well. It's a surprisingly impressive exploration of emotional disintegration.

With The Running Man, we have a complete novel that was written in only three days - and was published with almost no changes. Obviously, The Running Man is not your typical Stephen King novel. Action is the gas pedal, and King floored it from page one until the very end. Surprisingly, though, there is some pretty decent characterization of the main player - and a heavy undertone of social commentary worked into the book.

The setting is a future America in which society has totally fractured, leaving those on the wrong side of the tracks doomed to a life of misery. Ben Richards personifies that social inequity. Unable to provide for his wife and sick little girl, there is only one way out for him - the Network Games. No show satisfies the bloodlust of the public like The Running Man, and a man of Richards' temperament is just the kind of player the show is looking for. Richards proves himself a worthy contestant indeed - the Game in fact, will never be the same. To me, this novel is like a weak film adaptation of a King novel - stripped of all the nuances that make King such a special writer. That's not to way this isn't an exciting novel because it is - that's about all it is, though.

The Bachman Books : Four Early Novels by Richard Bachman (Rage / The Long Walk / Roadwork / The Running Man)::Description

Four of Richard Bachman's eerie works are gathered here in a posthumous edition. They are Rage, a story of stunning psychological horror about an "estra" ordinary high school student; "The Long Walk," a contest with death; "Roadwork, a strange variation on the theme of "Home Sweet Home"; and "The Running Man," where you bet your life--literally.

Peugeot PM21931 Review by Mackie

Worked fine until the batteries needed changing. Could never figure out how to do this. No instructions included.

Peugeot PM21931 Review by Music Lover (Minnesota)

This is a fantastic small automatic grinder. The size and shape are perfect for people who cook for one or two. The grinder was a little hard to separate to get the batteries in, but after a few trial and errors, it went together very well. The grinding adjustment is very easy - everyone can change it to their preference. If you want a very easy to use electric pepper mill, this one is the answer and it comes in so many colors -sure to go with every kitchen! Takes one finger to push the grind button plus the soft texture is easy on the hands.

Peugeot PM21931 Review by Jason A. Anderson (Bermuda)

Made by the huge French auto maker, Peugeot (the company apparently started out making small mills in the 19th Century), this is a well-designed, durable, high quality, battery operated mill. We ordered both the salt and pepper mills. I really like the salt mill as it has a stainless steel grinder that won't rust. The body of the mills are made of strong plastic so the bottom of the mills won't rust either (like other mills we've owned). One little glitch... the mills did not came with instructions, so getting the battery compartment open was a bit of a challenge. Tip: the little 'lock-tabs' inside the top section slide toward the middle exposing the battery compartment. It comes with 4 ordinary AAA batteries (a bonus) but we ordered rechargeable NiMH batteries as we already have a charger. ***** Highly recommended.

Columbia Infant's Snowtop ll Bunting - Timberwolf Camo 24M Review by PickyMom09

I got this in size 12 months for my daughter turning 1 in December in Wisconsin. She wore it all winter with no problem with either size or warmth. Some people have criticized this suit in other reviews for being too thin and therefore not warm enough for cold weather, but I disagree completely. She was plenty warm even in short bouts of below zero temps. At first look it does seem thin compared to a lot of winter coats made for kids, but it did the job for us. And if we were just running errands, I usually didn't even need a hat or mittens underneath - just use the hood and the fold-over sleeves! It was also GREAT for being in the car seat since there's no extra bulk to make safety an issue. If we planned to be outside for an extended period of time, I made sure she was wearing thicker clothing underneath, but not much extra besides regular clothing. In fact, if I put too much more than that underneath she was all sweaty when we got inside! I plan to buy another one this year in 24 months because it was so great! Awesome buy in my opinion. I had a friend who bought the next thicker Columbia bunting and she rarely used it because her little one was too warm in it most of the time; this one is just right!

Columbia Infant's Snowtop ll Bunting - Timberwolf Camo 24M Review by unarmbears

Love these! Both grandbabies wear them. If it's above 20 degrees and it's just a trip to the store, these are perfect, not too warm. The really cold days the babies wear their snow suits over them, add some boots and they are good to go!
